Honouring Fathers Who Keep Showing Up

Recently, I saw a clip on Instagram of my cousin posting his 3-year-old son fishing. It was actually really cool to see the fourth generation already trying to catch fish. Time really flies.

I’m not really into fishing myself. Because I tend to lose interest if I don’t catch anything after a few hours. I might even start throwing stones and try to make them skip across the water. But that was never the case with my dad, my uncles, or even my grandfather. They all loved fishing, almost to the point of being hooked on it.

Over time, I’ve learned a bit, trolling, casting, netting fish, and yes, sometimes messing up the line too. Fishing really is a patience game. It takes endurance, patience, strategy, and consistency. Sometimes you go home with nothing. Other times, you come back with a good catch you can even share. Fresh river fish hits different.

In a way, fishing builds resilience. It teaches you patience, consistency, and a never-give-up mindset. You just keep going until it works, or until the day is done.

Jesus’ time with His disciples often involved fishing. Even after their failures, He helped them catch fish, showing His authority over nature. And He said to them:

“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” — Matthew 4:19

There’s something powerful there, God turning ordinary work into a higher calling.

In the same way, many fathers fish not just for themselves, but for their families, friends, and sometimes even people they don’t know. That’s a picture of provision. Biblically, men are called to care for and provide for their families in every season, good, hard, confusing, or messy. The call is to stay faithful and steady.

So Kudos to all the men who keep showing up for their families and communities. Men Matter. They’re built with strength, resilience, patience, and a capacity to carry responsibility and still keep going. So thank God for faithful fathers in every season, through tears and joy.

And even more, we should be thankful for spiritual fathers who care for the wider body of Christ. Some are pastoring thousands, others hundreds.

They carry constant weight, prayers, messages, counselling, hospital visits, weddings, funerals, broken families, and people in crisis. They keep showing up, over and over again, for the hurting and the lost.

That’s the calling of spiritual fathers, men God has entrusted with His people. Some are strong in it, some are still growing into it.

May we continue to see their impact in our communities. It’s needed more than ever. This Father’s Day, let’s celebrate them, encourage them, and stand with them as they keep investing in lives. In their own way, they are still “fishing for people”, for the Kingdom.

Grateful for all fathers, and ESPECIALLY SPIRITUAL FATHERS, who carry that extra weight of shepherding God’s people.
